Istiadat Perarakan Panji-Panji 2009

The St John Ambulance of Perak state had organized and carry out the Istiadat Perarakan Panji-Panji event on 13th June 2009 at Ipoh Padang which is located opposite SMK St. Michael, Ipoh. The significant event was carried out to celebrate the 100 years of St John Ambulance in Malaysia from 1908 to 2008. This event was scheduled to carry out last year but due to some circumstances, it was held on the glorious morning of Saturday.
Trainings were carried out since May 2009 to train a team of 50 Ambulance Adult members to march pass the parade. They were required to walk slowly (perlahan jalan) in a smart manner. Our school was represented by 6 Ambulance Adult members, namely:
1) Cheah Wai Hoong
2) Looi Hong Wei
3) Fong Teik Sum
4) Wong Joe Hang
5) Cham Swee Wen
6) Donivald Tham Kam Loy

The event started around 8.00am when all the members were called for fall in by the parade commander, Sir Yow Weng Kit and Sir Chia Poh Seng. Various VIPs were present too. The VIPs included the Perak mentri besar, Dato Seri Dr Zambry bin Abdul Kadir and his royal highness, the ruler of Perak state, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbudin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuff Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-Lah.
A welcoming speech was given by the Pemerintah Negeri of St John Ambulance Perak, the Yang Berbahagia Dato Haji Mohd Zainal Abidin bin Haji Abdul Kadir to address the guest and express his gratitude towards his royal highness. He mentioned that the flag for this Panji-Panji event was given by the Lord of St John Ambulance in England to the St John Ambulance of Malaysia at the year 1999. 15 officers from Perak attended the ceremonial event. He even praised the Nursing Adult team from Perak who won the overall champion for the Nursing Adult category in the recent National-level First Aid and Home Nursing Competition.
This Istiadat Perarakan Panji-Panji event was unusual and special as it will be carried out if and only if important events fall. It replaces the Annual Parade which was carried out annually. The only differences was there will be no march pass from every division. For the overall presentation, this event turned up to be a successful one. The highly-spirited Panji-Panji team marched with glory, clearly displaying the pride of our motto - For The Service of Mankind.

Universal Camp III - 2009

Group Photo
The St John Ambulance of SMK St. Michael, Ipoh has organized a meaningful fun camp entitled Universal Camp III from 31st May to 3rd June 2009 at SM Yuk Choy (SUWA), Jelapang with the following divisions:
1) SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh, Ipoh
2) SMK Seri Ampang, Ipoh
3) SMJK Yuk Choy, Ipoh
4) SM Yuk Choy (SUWA), Jelapang
5) SMK Tarcisian Convent, Ipoh

The Council Led By Sir Leong Kar Heng
This wonderful camp was led by an officer from SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh, Ipoh, Sir Leong Kar Heng. Plannings and Meetings were held since February 2009 to coordinate and plan this camp since the Universal Camp II in 2002. Later, it was decided that Looi Hong Wei from our division will be selected as the Camp Commander and Leong Khoy Wan from SM Yuk Choy (SUWA), Jelapang will be elected as the Assistant Camp Commander.

Playing Tree and Squirrel

The 4 days 3 nights camp included various activities and games to be enjoyed by participants and no punishment will be given throughout the camp as it was a fun camp. The aim of this camp is mainly to strengthen the relationship between members from different divisions and to improve the coordination and cooperation among the committees from the 6 organizing divisions. It was indeed a success in this camp which turns up to suit the aims mentioned.

Members Setting Up Their Tent

Setting Up Tents

The first and second nights were spent in the school field with the tents provided by the headquarters. Members were complaining about the hot weather and they could not withstand the tank of mosquitoes which attacked them during the night. Immediate action was taken by the organizing committee by putting mosquito coils on both sides of the tents. A total of 12 tents were set up on the first night and 14 tents on the second night to stuff in the overwhelming members.

Members Climbing Robe to Reach The Top

Second day was indeed an eye opening experience for the members. They were taking the Outdoor Pursuit proficiency badge and their task was to complete the jungle trekking route located right behind SM Yuk Choy (SUWA), Jelapang. Various obstacles and difficulties were thrown upon the members as the route was muddy and there were places where a robe was needed to climb up to the higher ground. All the groups managed to complete the task given on time.

Magician Performing

SMI Performance

Third day was the showdown day. Happy Hours or performance night was on this day. Firstly, there were singings and performances by the organizing divisions' committees. Our division performance was a stunned up singing. The last-minute preparation requires all the committees to sing a verse of the song, Here In My Home. But fortunately, we managed to get the worst performance in the spectators' hearts. We even invited a superb magician to perform in our glorious night. The show amazed tonnes of members there. A thumb-up was given by them.

Camp Commander - Looi Hong Wei

Master of Ceremony - Ivan Tan & Tai Zhen Yeik

The final day was also the meaningful day of all. The team-up groups formed by members from various divisions were dismissed and they have to say goodbye to each other. Closing ceremony was great too. We managed to invite a state staff officer, Sir Chan Weng Hoong and the deputy headmaster of SM Yuk Choy (SUWA), Jelapang, Mr Leong Seng Nyien to attend the ceremonial event.

Best Leader - Group 5

Best Group - Sunshine (Group 5)

Mr Lau Kok Weng (Left) & Sir Leong Kar Heng (Right)

Souvenirs were presented to Mr Lau Kok Weng as the teacher advisor of St John Ambulance SM Yuk Choy (SUWA), Jelapang for his assistance throughout this camp. Certificates were also given to the committees and the members. The Best Group Award for this camp falls to Group 5 - Sunshine with the theme Shine for Glory. The Best Leader Award was also from the same group, (names will be updated later).

All Members Fall In

For the overall view, the Universal Camp III would not be a huge success without the teamwork, cooperation and sacrifice of each and every unit in this camp. For those who participated in this camp, thank you I bid on behalf of the organizing committees for making this camp a success. Thank you committees for sacrificing your energy and time, thank you officers for supporting and guiding us this far, last but not least, thank you participants for having your trust in us which enable us to organize this camp without much troubles.
